Healing Designs with Color Therapy Principles

Basic knowledge of colors’ properties helps to create interiors within healing balance of our inner nature and surrounding environment.

Color Therapy unfolds the magic of invisible qualities of visible colors and allows us to balance the interior of your house with our inner being.

Color Therapy

Colors can heal us. What a strong statement! How can it happen? When I would think about color, I would always imagine some colored object or colored light. I would never connect color to some vibrational energy. What is color then? According to the Webster College Dictionary of 1995 “Color – the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by it, usu. determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the reflected light; saturation or chroma; hue.”

Sun Light Specter

* Note: This picture was taken from www.dinshahhealth.org with the following note: “ The first spectrum was captured at noon in NJ on a sunny May day. It depicts a complete range of visible frequencies from red through violet, without of course the invisible infrared or ultraviolet.”

Furthermore, colored light has properties like wavelength and frequency because light is an electromagnetic radiation. It carries energy. The electromagnetic radiation is a vibration of electrons, protons, etc.

We are not going into quantum physics though. So, different colors vibrate with different wavelengths and different frequency. Colors carry energy. And it all goes through us. We are all exposed to colors, and we are like sponges absorb them. That is why it can influence us in a positive or negative way. The positive way is a healing way. To reinforce this idea, I would like to add words said by famous Swiss color theorist, Johannes Itten (1888- 1967) “colors are forces, radiant energies that affect us positively or negatively, whether we are aware of it or not.” (The Elements of Color, Johannes Itten, p. 12).

How does it work? We are also built from electrons and protons combined in atoms, then into molecules, then into cells, then into different organs, then into the body. So body vibrates too with its life energy. If we are not feeling well, depressed or not at our balance level, then somewhere in our energy field, we have some imbalances, blockages. Then specific color comes with its vibration and plugs in into our energy field and adds what we were missing. That is why we love some colors, but some colors irritate us because we have enough of that specific vibrant energy in our own system already. In other words, we have enough of that color.

As Dr. Kate W. Baldwin, M.D., follower of Darius Dinshah, wrote in the Atlantic Medical Journal in1927, “If the body is sick it should be restored with the least possible effort. There is no more accurate or easier way than by giving the color representing the lacking elements, and the body will, through its radioactive forces [the aura], appropriate them and restore the normal balance.” (Let Be The Light, Darius Dinshah, p. 7-9). Itten also stresses the importance of person’s energy field (aura) concluding as “In any attempt to account for subjective color, we must attend to the most minute traits; but the essential factor is the ‘aura” of the person. (The Elements of Color, Johannes Itten, p. 24). Our electromagnetic field is the aura. We are colors by ourselves.

Dr. Kate W. Baldwin Colonel Dinshah P. Ghadiali

If we like some colors, then we need those colors to balance us.

“Colour preference is a need to rebalance your energy” per June McLeod (Colours of the Soul, p. 25). Or Itten mentioned it in more sophisticated words as “Harmony in our visual apparatus, then, would signify a psychological state of equilibrium in which dissimilation and assimilation of optic substance are equal.” (The Elements of Color, Johannes Itten, p. 20). So we are unconsciously trying to balance ourselves internally through the outside world, through colors and forms including. We will get to the forms in the second part of this essay. It will be the Vaastu Shastra teachings. The colors we dislike we don’t need because that color wave we have already inside us, and we don’t need more of that. To help you to visualize the healing mechanism, imagine this picture. Draw in your mind or on the paper a vertical wavy line like a stream of water. Then erase somewhere in the middle a part of that wavy line. The stream stops. Then the right color comes with its wave and plugs its self into the broken part like a piece of the puzzle. The energy stream runs again! That how it works. Johannes Itten said “Yet the deepest and truest secrets of color effect are, I know, invisible even to the eye, and are beheld by heart alone.” (The Elements of Color, Johannes Itten, p. 7).

Colors are divided into cold and warm colors of the color palette. For example, if warm colors (purple to yellow) and cold colors (yellow-green to violet) are used in the interior, then the following effects will appear. Warm colors make our space smaller and bring the sensation of worthiness. On the other hand, cold colors create an effect of spaciousness and coolness. Green color is also considered as a medium in between cold and warm colors. Green brings balance and stability. It is often used to bring calming effect.

Color Wheel – Johannes Itten (www.w5.cs.uni-sb.de)

For color therapy purposes Dinshah P. Ghadiali divided colors in Spectro-Chrome Color Wheel on

  • Infra-Green Colors: Lemon, Yellow, Orange, Red; Green - median color or physical equilibrator;
  • Ultra-Green Colors: Turquoise, Blue, Indigo, Violet; Purple – depressant; Magenta – equilibrator; Scarlet – stimulant.

Infra-Green Colors are warm and Ultra-Green Colors are cool.

Healing properties of colors were used from the ancient times. Ancient Egyptians used color to cure the sick. According to Colour Healing Manual by Pauline Wills (UK) (p.23) "Archeologists have discovered that the Egyptians, like Atlanteans, had individual healing rooms built into their lavishly decorated temples. These rooms were constructed in such a way that when the sun entered them, its rays were dissipated into the colours of the spectrum. Those coming for healing were 'colour diagnosed' and then put into which radiated the prescribed colour." Using colors in our interiors, we can decorate not only with taste, but also have awareness of color healing properties and benefit from it if we study colors in depth and use them properly.

Find Your Healing Color Exercise

There are simple exercises in the Colours of the Soul book written by June McLeod which can be used by interior designers while helping a client to identify the palette for the house.

First, ask your self or your client to find the most loved color. The way to do it is the following.

  • Find a quiet and comfortable place in your house and place the color samples from any paint seller, then place those samples on the floor around you. Try to find a neutral background.
  • Close your eyes and quiet your mind for some time.
  • Then open your eyes and look quickly for the most loved color.
  • Secondly, find the most comforting and relaxing color.
  • Thirdly, find the most inspiring and awakening color.

Use the same technique to find second and third colors. Important note per June McLeod, "chose the color that stands out from all of the rest, that color you most love. Do it quickly before logic and reason step in.” (Colours of the Soul , p.143).

Do not allow your mind and logic to interfere with the choices of your inner being , of your heart. Only the inner voice is the true voice. The chosen colors can be used as they are or can be used as tones or shades of these colors for your interior.

  • Colors can be inspiring in the office,
  • relaxing in the bedroom and
  • most loved colors can be in the family room.

It can be decided differently according to the purpose of the room.

There is another important detail. It is recommended to involve in the color selection the other family members. The chosen colors use for walls, upholstery, rugs, window treatments, etc.

Babies' colors

There is important information for the Babies' colors. Babies’ energy field is very delicate. Therefore, designer has to be very careful with colors for babies’ rooms. Babies’ fontanelle at the top of the head is open that is why it makes baby very sensitive to colors. Therefore, there is a suggestion to keep white color with a baby bedding as long as possible especially with pillow cases, hats. The first nine months are very important for baby adjustment with the environment. The ideal color for nursery walls is peachy pink – the color of unconditional love with powder blue, sky blue or soft lilac picked out in small areas and the furnishings. For the art work pick white cream, ivory or buttery white. For cot covers and duvets prefer pale pastel with subtle delicate design with white sheets. (Colours of the Soul, p.139 - 140).

There is a suggestion on how to add another color without redecorating. If there is internal need or desire to add another color to the interior then add different accessories in that color such as accent pillows, art work, change lamp shades, etc. There is always a way of adding new color to the interior without major changes of the existing color schema in the space.

Healing Color AffIrmations

Healing color affirmations is another powerful tool we can use to help ourselves.

“Thoughts are vibrations sent forth by the ego or by the soul. Every word you utter should be potent with soul vibration. Speech without soul force is like husks without corn. Words saturated with sincerity, conviction, faith, and intuition are like highly explosive vibration bombs…” Paramahansa Yogananda wrote in his pamphlet Scientific Healing Affirmations (p.5).

So if we add to our own created affirmation a color according color’s embedded properties, then the affirmation will be very powerful. For example, if somebody is heart broken then say to your self in the present tense “I am in the pink bubble filled with pink color of unconditional Love. I am resting in this bobble and getting cured.” Repeat your affirmations. So they will become automatic and will penetrate your subconscious mind and reprogram you to the best.
